Want to learn how to start a fashion blog? You’re in the right place!
I’ve been blogging for more than a decade and have helped lots of friends and bloggers start their own fashion blog.
The best news is—it’s actually pretty easy! And yes, you can do it yourself, even if you aren’t a techie person.
Here’s your step-by-step guide on how to start a fashion blog in 2020.
First: Be Sure to Self-Host
There is WordPress.org and WordPress.com. There are also options like Wix and Squarespace and even Blogger.
Here, we’re talking about WordPress.org, which is a self-hosted WordPress site.
Why? It’s the best option, most robust, and most flexible. Here’s why:
Your blog is like a house.
- The hosting service (Siteground is my recommendation) is your lot. You need a reliable lot in order to build a great blog!
- WordPress, Squarespace, Blogger etc. are like the frames for your home.
- A WordPress Theme is the layout/design of your home (more on that below)
- Your Domain is your street address. Mine is lifewithmar.com
The reason I recommend self-hosting is quite simple:
When you self-host, you own your house.
Services like Squarespace or Wix are rented space.
That means if your landlord decides to close up shop one day, your blog is gone.
And if you want to monetize your blog–which most of us do!–you’ll want to make sure you own your home.
Self-hosted WordPress blogs also have really attractive, professional-looking themes. And that’s the kind of thing sponsors and advertisers really like.
HOW TO START A FASHION BLOG IN 2020
Ok, so now that you know WHY it’s so important to start a self-hosted WordPress blog, here’s a quick, easy tutorial on how to start a WordPress blog on Siteground.
I have tried several hosting providers for my websites. Popular ones like GoDaddy and Bluehost. I can honestly say, Siteground has been the absolute best.
I currently host with Siteground, which is what I recommend to my clients as well for a lot of reasons which I’m listing below.
It’s incredibly easy, and affordable, and is your FIRST step when starting your fashion blog.
How to Start a Fashion Blog in 5 Easy Steps
Step 1: Click this link to visit the Siteground Managed WordPress Hosting. You’ll see three options for your hosting package.
If this is your first blog, the StartUp package is more than enough. And it’s just under $7/month which is crazy-cheap.
Since I have more than one website, I went with the GrowBig package. But for those just getting started, the basic is enough!
Next, choose your domain (remember, this is your URL) whether you already have one or are registering a new one.
STEP 2: CHOOSE A DOMAIN NAME FOR YOUR FASHION BLOG
If you haven’t figured out what you want to call your blog yet, here are a few tips on how to choose one:
- Check all social media channels and make sure your name is available. If they aren’t, you can check variations but it’s best to have it all be the same.
- Be sure your blog name matches your blog content (It would be weird if Fruit & Frittatas was a makeup blog, for example, and not a food blog!)
- Make sure it’s easy to spell
- Be sure a .com is available
- Try a domain name generator, like Namemesh (these are fun!)
- Yes, you can use your name if you like.
SiteGround will migrate your website for free with the GrowBig or GoGeek plan if you already have an existing site elsewhere.
I did it for this site and it was SO easy!
Other web hosts do not include this service, which can be a total headache if you aren’t super-techy.
In fact, it’s one of the #1 reasons I recommend Siteground: their customer service is OUTSTANDING.
I had MANY issues with one of the hosts mentioned, and they were so incredibly rude to me I couldn’t understand WHY so many bloggers recommend them.
Then, I realized it’s because they have a very lucrative affiliate program.
It’s sad but true. Yes, I’ll make a small commission if you purchase through my affiliate link, but I would never, ever recommend something to you I didn’t truly believe in and use myself!
That is why I always recommend Siteground as my go-to.
Whenever I have a question, they are answered quickly through their chat. And my website was imported in less than 24 hours!
If you want to try it yourself, there’s also an easy Migrator plugin to try.
A FEW OTHER REASONS I RECOMMEND SITEGROUND
- Free SSL Certificate for Every Website. Guys, this is a biggie!
- Recommended by WordPress.org
- 12-month commitment: Other hosting websites will try and make you commit for 24-36 months to get the lowest price. Here, you’ll get to try it for the same low price just a year!
- Money-back guarantee: Not happy? Get a refund in 30 days!
- Fast service. Being able to serve your web pages quickly was a top reason I switched. It makes a huge difference in your user experience and in Google rankings!
- Automatic backups
- 24/7 Support.
Step 3: Review & Checkout
As you continue checking out, you’ll see a few options such as how long you’d like to lock in your rate and if you’d like to add extra services, like Site Scanner.
I did not spring for the SG Site Scanner but for less than $20 it’s an upgrade you may want to consider.
I 100% regret NOT locking in my rate for several years!
The low rate you are securing is an introductory rate. Once your term is up, your rate will go up some and I really regret not locking it in for 2-3 years from the onset!
No, it will not skyrocket, it is still affordable and my host of choice. I’m only saying this because in hindsight, I would strongly recommend you lock in your rate for as long as possible–it’s a nice perk, after all!
STEP 4: Pick a Pretty WordPress Theme
This is basically my favorite part when it comes to starting a fashion blog!
There are many free WordPress themes, but for less than $100 you can get a gorgeous, premium WordPress theme.
If you are specifically looking for feminine WordPress themes I have personally used and recommend these:
These themes are gorgeous and mobile-responsive. Also, support tends to be top-notch.
For extra bling, you can buy pre-made blog kits! These include logos, fonts, color options and more.
