What to Wear on the French Riviera: Vacation Outfit Ideas That Look Expensive

The French Riviera calls for a very specific kind of dressing: polished but not fussy, comfortable enough for a full day of walking, warm-weather appropriate, and versatile enough to go from a morning market to an evening dinner without a wardrobe change.

I spent 10 days exploring the French Riviera — St. Paul de Vence, Antibes, Cannes, Monaco, and Nice — and packed just 8 outfits that covered everything. Here’s what to wear, what to pack, and how to look expensive on vacation without overpacking.

What to Know Before You Pack for the French Riviera

The vibe along the French Riviera is classic European — think polished, understated, and effortless. It’s not resort-casual like a beach vacation in Mexico or the Caribbean. You’ll see a lot of linen, cotton, neutral color palettes, and structured accessories.

You’ll also walk a LOT. Like, way more than you think. Cobblestone streets, steep hills, and long afternoons exploring charming towns means your outfit needs to work as hard as you do.

My best advice? Build a mini capsule wardrobe around a cohesive color palette so everything mixes and matches.

I stuck to navy, cream, white, and black and it meant I could repeat layering pieces without looking like I wore the same outfit twice. It also keeps your handbag and accessory situation to a minimum.

And lean into natural fabrics — 100% cotton, linen, cotton jersey. When it’s warm and you’re on your feet all day, fabric is the difference between looking polished and looking wilted. Every single piece I packed was in a natural fiber and it made all the difference.

The Best Dresses for the French Riviera

Dresses are your best friend for European travel. They’re one piece, easy to style up or down, and the right silhouette looks put-together with zero effort.

Here are the vacation dresses I wore and would absolutely recommend.

Quince European Linen Midi Dress

This was my day one outfit exploring St. Paul de Vence and it set the tone for the whole trip.

It’s 100% European linen and fully lined — and the lining is 100% cotton, which matters. I’ve come across dresses that say they’re natural fiber but the lining is polyester and you feel trapped in a trash bag. Not the case here.

It has pockets, adjustable straps, and elastic in the back so it’s not snug on the waist or tummy area. Very figure flattering.

It comes in 13 color and print options and is under $85.

One note: I do wish I had gotten it hemmed as it’s a tad long on me. But it’s an easy fix and the dress is well worth it.

Quince 100% Organic Cotton Smocked Maxi Dress

This is the perfect vacation dress — I really cannot say enough good things about it.

The Quince smocked maxi comes in 6 colors, is under $60, and is soft, breathable, and has pockets.

The silhouette is very flattering and it’s a great day-to-night dress. Perfect for long days of walking when you might end up at dinner afterward and don’t want to change.

Easily a summer favorite and go-to for any warm-weather vacation.

LOFT Beach Triple Cloth Mixed Media Pocket Dress

I wore this one in Cannes and it’s a 10/10 — especially for the price.

The LOFT pocket dress has a flattering halter neckline, fit and flare skirt, and slits up the side. Super breathable.

The fabric itself has a beachy feel, but because it’s black and in a classic cut and silhouette, it reads expensive. That’s the trick: you don’t need an expensive dress, you need a good silhouette in a dark, sophisticated color.

It’s a mix of 100% cotton and a cotton/spandex blend. LOFT runs large in my experience, so keep that in mind with sizing.

The Drop Mixed Fabric Tank Dress

I wore this one for our day in Monaco and everything about it is a win.

The Drop tank dress feels buttery soft and looks luxe. It has an A-line skirt style that’s very flattering yet fitted at the bodice, and it has a pocket.

It is low stock so I’m also linking a similar version in case it sells out.

utcoco Striped Button Down Maxi Shirt Dress

This is my sleeper hit Amazon find from this trip.

The utcoco striped maxi dress looks WAY more expensive than it is. It’s 100% cotton, has a tie waist that’s very forgiving, and it’s super comfortable for exploring all day.

The striped print, button-down structure, and maxi length just read elevated. Someone would ask you where it’s from and be shocked when you say Amazon.

Runs TTS. I wore this one in Nice and it was perfect.

Beyond Dresses: Sets and Rompers That Travel Well

Not every vacation outfit has to be a dress. A great matching set or a versatile romper can be just as polished and even more comfortable for active travel days.

Z Supply Cotton Jersey Set

This set from Z Supply was my go-to for casual exploring days in Antibes.

The Z Supply Sloane V-Neck Tank and Scout Jersey Pants are 100% cotton jersey fabric. Lightweight, versatile, and runs TTS.

The pants are elastic waist with no pockets, and honestly when I first got them I wasn’t wowed for the price. But I find myself reaching for them ALL the time. They’re just very versatile, comfortable, fit well, wash well. I have another pair in my cart.

The pants come in 21 options — 4 of which are linen, which could be great for summer travel.

For any upcoming vacation, a relaxed, comfortable matching set like this in a natural fiber is a no-brainer.

L’Academie Dylan Romper

This is a piece I’ve gotten a LOT of mileage out of — daytime and evening.

The L’Academie Dylan Romper buttons and zips so you don’t have to worry about gaping, and it has pockets. Runs TTS and comes in 2 colors.

The simplicity is what makes it so versatile for styling. I’ve belted it, added layering pieces, and worn it at night. For this trip it was sneakers and a striped cardigan for a casual daytime look in Antibes.

It’s a little pricier but the cost-per-wear at this point is practically nothing.

Anrabess Striped Skirt Set (Rainy Day Backup)

I’m going to be honest — on its own, this Amazon set doesn’t scream expensive. It’s a casual set and it looks like one.

BUT. I picked up a faux fur vest while we were in Antibes, threw it over the Anrabess striped two-piece, and it completely transformed the look.

I’m linking a similar faux fur vest since the one I found was from a local boutique.

This was my backup outfit for a rainy day in Nice and it ended up being one of my favorite looks from the whole trip.

The Layering Pieces That Make Everything Look Expensive

This is the real secret to looking expensive on the French Riviera — or any European vacation, honestly.

A lightweight layer draped over your shoulders or thrown on in the evening takes a simple outfit and makes it look intentional and chic. I brought two layering pieces and they covered every single outfit.

Urban Revivo Tweed Knit Cardigan

This is the piece that takes any outfit from “nice” to “she looks expensive.”

The tweed knit cardigan is in a perfect creamy shade — not bright white, so it works year-round. Pretty pearl and gold buttons. Under $40.

I wore it with the linen midi dress in St. Paul de Vence for a relaxed, elegant look. Then I wore the same cardigan over the LOFT black dress in Cannes and it felt completely different — polished and put-together.

Same layer, two totally different outfits. That’s the capsule wardrobe in action.

Striped Knit Sweaters

I also had the Superdown Adriana Knit Sweater and an Anrabess navy striped cardigan from Amazon.

Throwing a striped knit over your shoulders is the easiest way to look chic and effortless. It takes you from day to night without changing your whole outfit.

The navy sweater paired with both the tank dress in Monaco and the romper in Antibes. One piece, two completely different looks.

What Shoes to Pack for the French Riviera (and How Many You Actually Need)

You do not need six pairs of shoes for a European vacation. I brought three pairs of ballet flats, sneakers, and one pair of heels — and the heels barely came out.

Here’s the breakdown that covered 10 days.

Ballet flats are the workhorses of a European trip. They’re comfortable enough for walking, dressy enough for dinner, and they look polished with every outfit.

I wore the MIA Rhinestone Stud Ballet Flats with several outfits.

For Monaco, I wanted something a little dressier, so I wore the Dolce Vita Cadel Flats in Cider Mesh. Still flats, still comfortable, but they felt elevated enough for the setting.

Sneakers covered the heavy walking days — Antibes, Cannes, and Nice. When you know you’ll be on your feet for 8+ hours on cobblestones, sneakers are the right call. Pair them with a dress or a matching set and they still look pulled together.

Heels I packed but barely wore. Since this was a family trip, we weren’t doing formal dinners that required them. Good to have as a backup, but don’t overpack shoes thinking you’ll need them.

Final Thoughts

I packed a few evening-specific outfits for this trip, but everything transitioned so wellf rom day to night that I didn’t end up needing them!

If you stick to beautiful dresses that are easy to dress up or down and natural fabrics in a cohesive color palette, you’ll have the perfect outfits for your French Riviera vacation.

Spread the love!
