How to Look Good When It’s Hot AF

It’s scorching right now, like 108 degrees kind of scorching! Whether you live some place hot like I do, you’re traveling to a warm destination, or those lovely hot flashes have decided to visit, chances are you want to look and feel cool.

Here are my top ten summer style tips that will have you feeling fresh and stylish all season long. Trust me, as someone who’s lived in the desert for most of my life, these are the hacks I swear by!

Mind Your Colors

First things first, let’s talk colors. You may think “white reflects light and black attracts it” and while that’s true, it’s not necessarily a hard and fast rule I recommend sticking to in the summer!

The truth about black is it’s excellent at hiding things. If you’re hopping from one air-conditioned spot to another, black can be your friend. A few drops of sweat will go totally unnoticed if you’re wearing all black!

Gray on the other hand is a big no. This color is incredibly unforgiving and will flaunt sweat stains for everyone to see.

And while it’s true that white reflects the sun, it can be hit or miss as a summer color.

The thing is, white can be see-through and can show a lot! So depending on the fabric, and the situation, I oftentimes recommend skipping white in the summer altogether.

My pro tip? Embrace prints! They’re fab for hiding those sneaky sweat patches when you’re having fun outdoors or at a summer wedding.

Natural Fabrics only

Once upon a time, I thought breathable fabrics were all hype until I wore a polyester dress in the summer heat – I felt like I was roasting in an oven! I now swear by 100% cotton and linen. They breathable, they’re comfy, end of story.

Another unpopular opinion: steer clear of silk. Yes, it’s a natural fabric but if you’re prone to sweating, it’s very unforgoving and will not only show everything, but stain easily.

Not sure where to shop for natural fibers without breaking the bank? Here are a few favorites to try:

  • Quince
  • Gap
  • J.Crew
  • Everlane

Loose Clothing for the Win

Forget about squeezing into tight denim or tight tanks this summer. I’m all for loose, billowy dresses and skirts to keep things breezy and the air flow circulating. They’re so easy to dress up or down, and you don’t have to think twice about looking put together.

Undercover Comfort

If flowy skirts aren’t your thing because of chafing, don’t fret! Throw on some shorts underneath. Thigh Society has these amazing cooling shorts that I swear by and are super breathable.

You can also get undershorts on Amazon, though I’ve personally tested both and prefer the fit, fabric and feel of Thigh Society.

Anti-Sweat Accessories

For those who sweat (hello, me), underarm and bra sweat pads are life-savers. They’re discreet and excellent for outfits that otherwise show everything.

Footwear You Won’t Sweat

Ditch those trendy jelly sandals; your feet will thank you later. Open-toe, breathable sandals are the way to keep cool and comfortable. And by all means, don’t forget your socks if you’re wearing sneakers!

Cover Up What You Can

If you’re going to be in direct sun, don’t forget your sunglasses and a hat! If a hat is going to mess with your hairstyle, then bring a chic umbrella along with you.

When out in the sun, I recommend wearing your hair up and carrying a handy mini fan – Amazon has a ton of cute ones. It’s surprising how often you’ll use it and how much it helps to keep the heat at bay. Remember, the sun’s harshness can speed up aging, so always take precautions.

Spread the love!
