Fashion Goal Ideas

1. Shop Local

One of my personal fashion goals for 2022 is to shop a little more locally. With the pandemic, I got a little (read: a lot) used to ordering clothes online.

Listen, I LOVE shopping online and won’t stop (see this post for online shopping tips and this one for how to find cute clothes on Amazon). But there is something to be said about supporting your local community. Not to mention, there are some REALLY cute boutiques here in Scottsdale!

ACTION ITEM: Next time you’re considering doing another online clothing haul, make the time to get to know some of your local shops instead.

2. Wear Everything in Your Closet

This sounds ambitious doesn’t it? But really, shouldn’t we be wearing everything in our closet? I bet you don’t (I don’t either). So why not set a fashion goal to wear everything in your closet this year!

This will not only force you to get creative with outfit ideas but also make you see what you really wear and what you don’t.

ACTION ITEM: Every time you wear something from your closet, turn the hanger around so you know you’ve worn it! This way you can see exactly what you haven’t worn in your closet yet.

3. Shop Sustainable Fashion

I have to admit I am not the best about this, but there are loads of fantastic sustainable fashion brands out there. If this is something that’s important to you, look into shopping a bit more sustainably this year.

ACTION ITEM: Bookmark some of your favorite fashion sites and bloggers to follow who shop sustainable fashion.

4. Experiment with a New Pattern or Color

Sometimes we can get stuck in our own ways. While it’s good to have a sense of personal style, that doesn’t mean we should be completely closed off to new ideas.

Make it a point to experiment once a in while and try a new pattern or color you may not have previously tried.

ACTION ITEM: If you’re up for this challenge, decide if you’ll do it once a week, once a month or a few times this year.

5. Declutter and Donate

I could have easily led with this fashion goal as decluttering and donating really should be an ongoing process! And, it will help you achieve all of your other fashion goals for the year.

Take some time to clear out your closet of unworn items, ill-fitting items or pieces that have gone out of style.

6. Implement a “No New Clothes” Rule

A lot of people are taking the style challenge to completely stop buying all new clothes! You can set a goal for yourself to try this for a month, a few months or a few times throughout the year.

This really forces you to shop your own closet and make looks with what you already own.

7. Only Buy Clothes Fit For Your Lifestyle

In my style guide, The Wardrobe Fix, I talk a lot about how one of the biggest reasons you feel like you have nothing to wear is because you’re shopping for items that don’t fit with your day-to-day lifestyle.

build a better wardrobe basics

This year, make it a fashion goal to knock it off! Evaluate your lifestyle and see what percentage of clothes you need for casual wear, formal wear, active wear, at-home wear, etc. Then, buy accordingly.

8. Avoid Fast Fashion

If you’re sick of feeling like you have nothing to wear, one of the quickest ways to fix that is to stop buying fast fashion.

One of the biggest issues with fast fashion is it’s like a quick fashion “fix”; you get something super cute, super cheap, super trendy that you probably won’t wear again or isn’t easy to mix and match in your wardrobe.

ACTION ITEM: Next time you’re tempted to buy something fast fashion, see if you can find a higher quality piece elsewhere.

9. Invest in Luxury, Timeless Pieces

And speaking of higher-quality pieces, it’s time to invest in those if you haven’t already. These really make up the building blocks of any fashionable wardrobe and can last you for years to come.

10. Stop Buying Aspirational Pieces

Only buy what you can wear now. Period, end of story. That means avoiding items you don’t yet have an occasion for or items you don’t fit into yet.

The latter is probably the most important of all as you really should buy items that you love and make you feel good. Buying something that doesn’t fit right will make you uncomfortable or, worse, serve as a reminder that you’re not happy where you are at.

ACTION ITEM: Make sure every piece you are buying this year is for this year. Not a “someday, maybe!”

  1. These are really great tips!! I’ve been doing a MASSIVE declutter for the last week or so. I’ve finished pretty much every room in our home aside from the garage and my closet haha!! I’m trying to pare down my wardrobe so I can actually see what I have and shop my closet more. I’m also investing in more high end pieces so I don’t have to shop as much!

  2. This is all such excellent advice! I really think so many people are blinded by consumerism that they don’t stop to appreciate what they already have. It’s so easy to end up with so many pieces we never wear simply because they were pretty and we didn’t give a thought to who made them, the environmental impact, how it fits, when we’d actually wear it, etc.
