Footwear Flops
Cutout Booties
These shoes can’t decide if they want to be boots or sandals. And listen, I loved them!
Both peeptoe booties and the cutout ankle boots are outdated and need to go.
What to Wear Instead: Swap these out for a classic ankle boot. They’re timeless and a much more streamlined silhouette.
Wedge Booties
TBH, I’ve never been a fan of the wedge bootie or sneaker. Wedges are an essential shoe every woman should own, but that doesn’t mean every shoe type needs to be a wedge.
What to Wear Instead: Opt for a block heel boot instead. Block heels offer more support and comfort than wedges without sacrificing style.
Scarves and Accessories
Infinity Scarves
Infinity scarves had their moment, often paired with felt hats and knee-high boots. It’s the classic Millennial influencer outfit that’s definitely worn out its welcome.
What to Wear Instead: Consider a simple, classic scarf that doesn’t overwhelm your look. You can wear a scarf in your hair, on your purse, around your neck and more!

The Gucci Belt
Listen, I have a Gucci belt too. In fact, I’m keeping mine as I know this will make a comeback!
Right now, however, the Gucci belt is a little overdone.
People are favoring less logo-heavy accessories and as quiet luxury continues to reign supreme, we’ve kind of seen the death of the Gucci belt.
If you have this pricey piece, don’t sweat it; fashion trends are cyclical and this one will be back.
What to Wear Instead: Instead, opt for a discreet, skinny belt. They’re more elegant and versatile. The Celine belt is very popular right now as are more minimal belts.
Tops and Outerwear
Tunic Tops
Tunic tops, especially with skinny jeans, are no longer the go-to. Bonus points if you styled this with a long waterfall cardigan like I did!
Both of these trends are very dated, and need to be updated. They were a popular Millennial look but we can definitely update it for 2024 and beyond!
What to Wear Instead: Forgo the long, shapeless top and aim for a crop top, boxy top or something that hits at the waist.

Cold Shoulder Tops
Cold shoulder tops are a fashion crime. Yup, I said it!
I had very few of these as I never really “loved” them, but now they absolutely make me cringe.
What to Wear Instead: Opt for tops with more subtle cutouts or no cutouts at all. Off-the-shoulder is also an on-trend top trend to try.
Floral Kimonos
For whatever reason, floral kimonos are still crazy popular on Amazon. In fact, this one below is listed as a top seller!
- Chiffon cardigan is sofe, light and comfortable
- Plus size Floral Cardigan, Boho Tops for Women, Loose Casual Puff Sleeve, Open Front, Lace…
It’s particularly popular as a swimsuit coverup. And, it was an easy way to add some interest to a basic jeans and tank outfit.
What to Wear Instead: Try a solid or lace kimono for a more up-to-date look.
Waterfall Cardigans
Ah, the waterfall cardigan. I was a BIG fan of this trend.
It felt and looked so flattering and I had many, many waterfall cardigans.
The Barefoot Dreams one in particular was crazy-popular. They still sell it, but there are more up-to-date silhouettes you may want to try.
What to Wear Instead: Cropped cardigans, often worn as a top, are much more on-trend for 2024 and beyond.

Embellishments and Prints
Embellished Tops
Tops with built-in jewelry are a hard pass. They limit creativity and often look cheap and tacky.
The worst part is they’re still being sold! But just because something is still being sold, doesn’t mean it’s in style.
What to Wear Instead: Go for plain tops and add your own accessories. This allows more flexibility in styling and your top won’t look like a DIY craft project.
Chevron, Tie-Dye and Other Prints
Prints like tie-dye, animal print, and Chevron patterns quickly date an outfit. Especially when styled with that big chunky statement necklace–you know the look!
What to Wear Instead: Stick with classics like stripes or solid colors for a timeless wardrobe.
I hope this post gave you some ideas on how to refresh your wardrobe and update some old Millennial outfits!
