How to Wear a Summer Scarf: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re like me, you may have a small (or not so small) collection of pretty silk scarves in fun vibrant colors and patterns. These lightweight summer scarves are such an elevated accessory – and they’re totally making a comeback right now!

If you’re not sure how to wear a summer scarf when it’s a billion degrees out here are a few ways to rock the trend, without getting stared at like a total weirdo.

How to Wear a Summer Scarf

First, it comes down to the actual scarf. Choose something light and breezy, like linen, silk or silk/cashmere combos.

A summer scarf is oftentimes a bit on the sheer side and won’t be thick like its winter counterparts.

In fact, anything knit or thick is just too heavy for the summer months and best reserved for the fall.

Fun prints and light colors also make for great summer scarves, like this Amazon scarf (under $30!).

I am also loving this geometric scarf from Nordstrom. The shades of green are totally on trend, and the colors are neutral enough to go with a lot. This scarf is offered in 5 gorgeous prints, it’s hard to choose just one!

Speaking of silky, this material is another great bet for a beautiful summer scarf. This beautiful floral scarf from Anthropologie is made from a soft spun micromodal fabric, similar to linen and silk but much easier to take care of!

Look for a scarf that’s proportionate to your size; the scarf shouldn’t look like it’s swallowing you! This lightweight cashmere and silk scarf is perfect for this. The fabric lays beautifully without being completely overwhelming.

While it’s ok to wear a blanket scarf in winter, it’s just not right for a summer look. So yes, put that blanket scarf away until it’s fall or winter.

The way you tie your scarf in the summer is also key. If you’re looking for some inspiration on how to tie that scarf, check out this video that shows 25 chic and easy ways to tie a scarf.

But, take note: some of these styles are best reserved for fall.

You wouldn’t be tying your scarf like a turtleneck or have a big thick knot in the summer months. Think: loose and easy, breezy styles.

Summer scarves are great layering pieces for summer, especially if you live somewhere hot. You can also easily stash them in your purse so you can wrap one on at a cool restaurant or put it away when you’re outdoors.

Ways to Wear a Summer Scarf

The real trick to styling scarves in the summer is to think outside of the box! There are so many ways to wear a scarf that won’t have you sweating in the summer sun. Here are a few of my favorites.

as a hair accessory

Simply tie your silk or linen scarf around the base of a ponytail or bun for a feminine way to elevate your look. I recommend using a smaller-sized silk scarf for this look to avoid too much weight on your ponytail!

As a headband

Similarly, a headband is one of the cutest and easiest ways to incorporate a scarf into a summer outfit. Try it with an updo!

A head wrap is another fun, trendy way to style your scarf this summer. Plus, this method protects your scalp and hair from the sun!

Around the neck

This classic way to wear a scarf is perfect for smaller scarf sizes this summer. Try an ascot sized scarf to achieve this elevated, preppy look.

As a fun bracelet

One of the more unique ways to style a scarf is as an arm accessory! You could even replicate this look higher up the arm for a boho feel.

As a belt

This scarf trend is super fun! Tying a colorful scarf around your waist is the perfect way to make a simple outfit summer-appropriate. Try this the next time you throw on your favorite denim shorts and a white tee.
