I Tried a $25 Body Wash. Here is What I Really Think About Nécessaire
Have we become so bougie that a $25 body wash is really necessary or is it all influencer hype?
Honestly, it’s probably both. Which is why I put together this honest Nécessaire review for you to help you with your shopping decision.
First, I’ll break down a bit of background on the company + what they stand for in case you aren’t familiar with Nécessaire body products.
Then, I’ll review some of the individual products I’ve tried below. I have not tried them all so cannot comment on them all.
The products featured here have been sent to me as part of the Nécessaire ambassador program but have not influenced my thoughts or review. (For context, I spent nearly 15 years of my career as a magazine editor where it’s common practice to receive items to try out and does not guarantee favorable coverage or any coverage at all).
Here, I’ll weigh both the good and the bad in this review of Nécessaire. Hope this helps!
What’s the big deal with Nécessaire?
Don’t you just love a pretty, modern skincare product with beautiful, minimalist packaging? Yes, most of us do. And Nécessaire has nailed our collective desire for pretty and functional personal care products.
Going beyond that, Nécessaire is a trendy clean beauty brand that’s also sustainable, boasts anti-aging benefits, and is on a personal mission to help improve the environment and our personal body care products.
Nécessaire came onto the scene a few years ago and quickly grew in popularity with its vitamin-infused shower products that include body lotions, serums, body wash, exfoliators and shampoos and conditioners.
They are climate-neutral certified; plastic-neutral certified (meaning they literally track and offset their plastic footprint); and considered a clean beauty brand.
In fact, all products follow the EU’s standard for clean beauty. That means Nécessaire’s personal care products are:
- Cruelty-free
- Vegan
- Fragrance-free (some)
- Paraben-free
- Hypoallergenic
- Sulfate-free
- Silicone-free
- No synthetic fragrances used (scent comes from essential oils)
They are also manufactured right here in the U.S. and donate 1% of proceeds to environmental non-profits.
Another reason Nécessaire has become so popular is that the personal care products are vitamin-infused.
Nécessaire’s body wash, for example, is touted as a multivitamin for the skin. Who wouldn’t want to upgrade their shower routine with a vitamin cleanser that promises healthier, nourished skin?!
Sound like a mission you can get behind while enjoying a luxe bath experience? Here’s what I think of the actual products I’ve tried…
Necessaire Body Wash Review
The Body Wash by Nécessaire is probably one of its most popular products.
Your skin is the largest organ in your body so it’s important to lather up with something that’s good for it and free of harmful chemicals.
The formula itself is a light shower gel. Nécessaire’s body wash contains:
- Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Omega-6
- Omega-9
You can grab it in four scent options:
- Fragrance-Free
- Sandalwood
- Eucalyptus
- Bergamot
I have tried the fragrance-free option, Sandalwood and Eucalyptus. I have to say, I strongly disliked the sandalwood scent. It’s fine for your hubby but I just did not find the musky scent appealing at all and find it off-putting. I actually avoided using it altogether and also found it overpowering.
The fragrance-free one is nice if you are sensitive to smells. But I did really enjoy the eucalyptus scent. It reminded me of going to the spa and smells very light and refreshing.
You can purchase The Body Wash on its own for $25 though your best deal is to grab the Body Ritual Set bundle (save $45!).
The packaging itself is attractive in my shower. Though I do wish there was a pump option as that would be easier with wet hands and common in other body washes.
Pros:
- Vitamin-infused and clean ingredients
- Variety of scent and fragrance-free options
- Very light gel formula
- Aesthetically pleasing
Cons:
- Pricey, though a little does go a long way
- Wish there was a pump
Final rating: Would I repurchase Nécessaire body wash? I’d say it’s about a 6/10 chance I would. It was good, but it certainly didn’t blow my mind.
Nécessaire The Body Lotion Review
I LOVE a good body cream and am willing to splurge on a good moisturizer when I find a favorite so I was especially excited to try out The Body Lotion, especially since it’s multivitamin-infused.
A few of the key details:
- Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Omega-6
- Omega-9
- Clean
- Vegan
This moisturizing body lotion is priced at $25 for 6.8 oz, but you can also get it in a bundle which lowers the price. Or, sign up for the recurring membership and the 5th delivery will be free.
The lotion itself is nice and moisturizing. It absorbs quickly and does not leave behind an oily or greasy residue.
I especially liked the scent-free option as I don’t like heavily-scented lotions on me all day. If you do, the option for a variety of different scents is nice.
Again, it didn’t exactly blow me away. And out of all the Nécessaire products, this one has to be the most frustrating when it comes to packaging.
It is pretty, yes. I like the minimal look and feel. But to get to the lotion, you need to unscrew the cap and then squeeze the tube. This is just a small extra step but I’d prefer a traditional lotion pump.
Also, this makes it difficult to use all of the product that’s in the tube.
That being said, I love that I can use this lotion on my kids, too. It just makes getting ready in the morning easier and I don’t have to worry about a separate lotion for them since this one is clean and fragrance-free.
Pros:
- Not too thick, not too thin consistency
- Well-hydrating and absorbs quickly
- Clean and vitamin-infused
- Good for the skin and planet
- Looks pretty on my vanity
- Fragrance-free option
Cons:
- Packaging is a total pain
- Pricey
Final rating: 7/10. Although the packaging is frustrating to me, I do like the lotion in combination with the serum and would repurchase this. Get both in The Body Treatment set and save $15!
The Nécessaire Body Serum Review
I could have led with this product but sandwiched it in the middle for a reason—because, woah. I absolutely LOVE this product!
I was completely blown away by The Body Serum and never want to let it out of my beauty arsenal.
We buy serums for our skincare routines all the time, but have you ever purchased a body serum? Honestly, it had never crossed my mind before until I was introduced to The Body Serum.
And it is SO good. The Body Serum is a daily hyaluronic acid serum for the skin. It is incredibly moisturizing and has an amazing texture to it. You can apply it on its own or mix it in with the lotion.
This is especially good for the dry winter months, dry skin woes or if you have eczema-prone skin. You can also just use it in certain areas rather than your entire body if you wish.
The formula itself contains:
- Hyaluronic Acid
- Molecular Weight I
- Molecular Weight II
- Molecular Weight III
- Molecular Weight IV
- Molecular Weight V
- Niacinamide
- Ceramide NP
It is a gel formula and like many of the other Necessaire products, has won plenty of awards. This one is pricier than some of the other products but should last you much longer as well.
Pros:
- Incredibly hydrating
- Great packaging, so easy to access the formula!
- Aesthetically pleasing
- Clean, cruelty-free
- Hylauronic acid
Cons:
- Price
Final Rating: 10/10. I sincerely cannot recommend this product enough, I am in LOVE! You can also get this in the Body Treatment Set and save $15, which is a great option. It includes the lotion and is the best value duo. Combine both for happy, healthy skin!
Necessaire Body Exfoliator
A good exfoliator is a must for your shower routine. I have tried sugar scrubs as well as coffee scrubs and was intrigued to try this clean exfoliator.
Some of the key ingredients in Nécessaire’s exfoliator includes:
- Bamboo Charcoal
- Pumice
- Glycolic Acid
- Lactic Acid
- Salicylic Acid
It does the job. It softens the skin and lightly exfoliates without leaving skin dry. Your skin does feel softer and while it doesn’t leave that oily residue a sugar scrub will, it looks and feels effective.
Again, I particularly like this one in the Eucalyptus scent. If you want to try all the shower goodies, your best bet is The Body Kit which includes the exfoliator, lotion and body wash and saves you $20.
Pros:
- Clean ingredients
- Minimalist packaging
- Fair price point
- Subtle scent
- Exfoliates without drying skin
- Leaves skin feeling smooth and soft
Cons:
- Packaging could be better
- It’s good, but not extraordinary
Rating: 7/10. I would repurchase this and recommend it as part of a bundle.
Other Nécessaire Products
I haven’t personally tried all of the Nécessaire products yet, but there are several new products:
- The Body Oil
- Deodorant
- Hand cream
- Shampoo and conditioner
I’d recommend checking out the customer reviews on the website if you are interested in getting any of these.

Is Nécessaire Worth it?
In general, I’ve found that companies that pride themselves on a certain modern aesthetic + altruistic values do have higher prices. And we, as consumers, are paying them in order to be part of that mission.
Apple, for example, creates pretty tech devices. They’re more expensive than other options which, arguably, may do the same thing. But you’re buying into more than just a cell phone, right?
The same is true for many of these clean beauty brands, especially those with a sustainability mission behind them. Because a mission attached to a product is much more than just a product you’re buying.
Really then, whether or not Nécessaire is worth it to you is pretty subjective.
You can buy body wash at your local CVS for under $10 and it will also clean your body. But what are the ingredients? Are they vitamin-infused? Are they sustainable brands? Do they have nice packaging? If these things are important to you, then give Nécessaire a try.
Are Nécessaire’s products good? Yes.
Is it worth the price tag? Well, if you’ve read this far then my guess is your interest was already piqued and the price point itself isn’t your major point of doubt. It likely is whether or not the products are actually good. And in that respect, I can honestly answer that yes, they are.
With the exception of The Body Serum, none of them blew me away. But we also need to keep our expectations in check, especially when it comes to products that are heavily influencer-hyped. I mean, when was the last time a body wash blew you away? It’s soap, right?
Perhaps the problem wasn’t in the product itself, but more so my expectations that it would rock my world.
And the more I use Nécessaire products, the more I really like them. Especially the Body Treatment Set (serum + lotion combo), which I would 100% recommend and repurchase.
